Eigthteen new affordable homes in Fareham were opened on the 27th May 2009 on the site of the former Coldeast Hospital in Salisbury Green, Fareham. The site, now known as Admiral’s Wood, was transferred to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) as one of ninety seven redundant hospital sites. The agency has master planned the site which is now being released for the development of a new community.
David Edwards, Regional Director of the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) in the South East said: “I am delighted to see the completion of this phase of the Coldeast project. We have been working closely with our partners Fareham Borough Council; our developer Miller Homes; and housing society Swaythling, part of Radian, to bring a new community to Fareham. There are substantial housing pressures in the area and a great need for affordable housing in the area.
“It is a prime focus for the HCA to help provide affordable, quality homes in areas where people want to live and work. Coldeast is such an area. All homes built on our sites meet high quality and design standards to ensure the impact on the environment is lessened.
The homes form part of the first phase of a development of 150 new homes of which 25% will be affordable homes to buy or rent.
The site is set within 46 ha of land on the border of woodlands leading down to the River Hamble. A new play park will be provided for the use of all residents and the community hall, currently used by the local scouting group, will be refurbished and transferred to Fareham Borough Council.
The HCA has ensured the preservation of locally listed buildings including the stable block, dairy cottage, cart shed and the two main gateways to the site.
