Radian, a housing and care provider based in the south, has won yet more national recognition for its focus on sustainability at Inside Housing’s Sustainable Housing Awards last week. Radian won the prestigiousSocial Housing Provider of the Year - Innovative Approach to Green Homes Award” at the ceremony hosted by channel 4’s news anchorman Jon Snow.

Lindsay Todd, Radian’s Chief Executive, said: “It is tremendous to have Radian's commitment to sustainable homes recognised by thisSHA_Awardv2 award. It reflects the contribution of colleagues, customers, and boards throughout Radian, and would not have been possible without the support of local authority partners, contractors and professional advisors to support us in delivering our vision. I am especially pleased that it is our "innovative approach to green homes" that is recognised, since innovation will be essential if we are to meet the challenge of climate change.

Already acknowledged as a pioneer within the sector, many of Radian’s numerous sustainable projects have been adopted as best practice case studies, nationally and regionally. Radian’s experience in sustainable development, and specific expertise in retrofit, has now helped to secure European Regional Development Funding from South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to undertake an eighteen month study to build capacity for low carbon retrofit in the South East region.

Part of the judging committee and Editor of Footprint, Philippa Ward, commented, “Radian’s post occupancy research and evaluation work was second to none, we applaud them for “learning from experience” as they progressed with each new development. No wonder they’ve been described as a “hot bed of innovation”.

Radian’s growing reputation as a sector leader in sustainability has also secured an enviable line-up of speakers for its Retrofit conference in Liphook on the 27th November, including the Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, David Orr.

Other project activities include the training of 175 organisations in retrofitting properties and developing new conceptual financial models to support the uptake in retrofitting. Radian has also recently been awarded a contract to undertake a full feasibility study by the Technology Strategy Board as part of their Retrofit for the Future competition.

Talking about Radian’s focus going forward, Lindsay said, “We aim to maintain the level of innovation identified by this award, at a time when reducing levels of CO2 in newly built and existing homes is so critical. We have been pioneering the retrofit of difficult properties, and on 27 November leading experts from the sector are joining us for a conference and debate on the issues surrounding this subject, just prior to the Copenhagen Climate Summit. ”
