Radian, a housing and care provider based in the south, is leading the way to deliver the government’s 2050 target of reducing total CO2 emissions by 80% in all homes. Winner of the prestigious Social Housing Provider – Innovative Approach to Green Homes award at this year’s ‘Inside Housing’ Sustainable Housing Awards, Radian is hosting their own retrofit conference on 27th November.
The conference, taking place in Hampshire, precedes the Copenhagen Climate Summit in December and will be of particular value to everyone involved in planning and managing housing stock, both new and aging, plus those responsible for policy making and implementing the strategy for sustainable housing. The conference will include key note speeches from the leading experts and a retrofit ‘Question Time’ with the panellists.
Confirmed speakers include: David Orr, Chief Executive of NHF; John Doggart, Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Academy and co-creator of BREEAM (the world’s longest standing and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings); Andrew Lee, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Development Commission; and Professor Anne Power, Professor of Social Policy London School of Economics. Colin Butfield, Head of Campaigns WWF, who are secretariat to The Existing Homes Alliance will also be joining the speakers to take part as a panellist in the Question Time debate. Philippa Ward, Assistant Editor of Inside Housing will be Chairing the debate.
Described as “A hotbed of innovation” by Sir Duncan Michael, chief judge of the Housing Corporation Gold award panel for environmental sustainability and “At the forefront of the sustainable movement” by Dr Caroline Lucas MEP, Leader of the Green Party; Radian’s experience has now helped to secure European Regional Development Funding from South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to undertake an eighteen month study to build capacity for low carbon retrofit in the South East region.
The ‘Retrofit South East’ project will, as the centrepiece, see the refurbishment of 14 fuel poor homes to exemplar energy efficiency standards. Other project activities include the training of 175 organisations in retrofitting properties and developing new conceptual financial models to support the uptake in retrofitting. Radian has also recently been awarded a contract to undertake a full feasibility study by the Technology Strategy Board as part of their Retrofit for the Future competition.
Piloting and developing several ground-breaking projects that showcase the level of retrofit expertise at its disposal, Radian has already become the first organisation to undertake a ‘Generation Homes’ retro-fit in the country, to a grouping of six homes in 2006 to demonstrate deep reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. This project, undertaken in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, was undertaken 3 years ahead of the Government’s Heat and Energy strategy consultation paper.
Recently Radian has partnered the Environment Agency on a two year water efficiency project. To support this research Radian has undertaken an exemplar new build and retro-fit project.
