Residents of Windsor Housing’s Manor Farm Sheltered Housing scheme have raised £1,000 for the Help the Heroes charity. The residents raised the money over seven months by holding coffee mornings for local residents, selling raffle tickets and holding Bring & Buy sales.
Each year, residents of the 55 self contained apartments on Manor Farm Close in Dedworth decide on a charity that they will adopt for the year. Whereas other sheltered schemes may choose to raise money for their own benefit, these residents selflessly donate all money they raise to a different nominated charity every year. ![]()
This year, the Help for Heroes charity was nominated and considered a worthy cause due to the ongoing coverage of the British Armed Forces’ commitment to conflicts overseas. As all the residents are from a generation that have experienced the effects of war at first hand, they decided that the care Help for Heroes offers servicemen and women who have been injured in the field of war, would be a poignant and relevant charity to support.
Having been touched by war, the residents commented that in modern warfare many seriously wounded servicemen and women were spared their lives by the advancement of technology and were delighted to assist a charity that helps to restore a quality of life to those injured, reinforcing Radian’s vision of allowing people to flourish. The residents proudly handed a cheque over to Tina Peacock-Edwards, the representative from the charity who thanked the residents and spent time chatting to them all.
Kathy Lee, a resident who runs the social club at Manor Farm said, “Today we received a letter from Help for Heroes officially thanking us and explaining where our money went to help. I know it’s only a dribble but if everybody does what we do, it all adds up.”
Manor Farm residents welcome any members of the local community to attend their coffee mornings and help raise more money for deserving charities, every Wednesday from 10am in Manor Farm Close, Dedworth.
