As part of the Eden Project's national 'Big Lunch' campaign, Swaythling Housing ran a hugely successful Big Lunch at Weston Shore on Sunday 18th July. Over two hundred people brought along a picnic on a very sunny afternoon and were treated to an array of activities, including soothing jazz by Southampton band, Frayed Knot, who provided their entertainment for free.
Among the guests was Cllr Carol Cunio, Mayor of Southampton, who supported the event and talked to many local residents. Children were able to hone their football skills using the expertise of two coaches from Eastleigh Football Club. Younger children enjoyed exploring a fire engine, as well as bouncing on the inflatables and playing with balloons.
For those who ran out of time to prepare a picnic, the RKdia team was on hand with delicious burgers and hot dogs. Despite the tide and wind not obliging for the event, the Southampton Amateur Rowing Club encouraged many families to try out the rowing machines on the shore.
As well as providing family entertainment, most of which was free of charge, the event offered the opportunity for residents to meet their neighbours and to find out about local activities. Residents were provided with information on housing schemes, environmental advice, as well as the chance to discuss safety issues with their local Police and Community Safety Officers.
Commenting on the success of the day, Giv Thornton – Community Development Officer at Swaythling, said: "We're delighted that the day was such a success. It's so rewarding to hear very positive feedback – one resident told me that taking part in this event made her feel she belonged to a real community. That's exactly what this event is all about".
The Big Lunch at Weston Shore was led by Swaythling Housing Society (part of Radian) in partnership with Southampton City Council Communities Team, Raglan Housing Association, Hampshire Fire Brigade and the local Police.
