John Kennedy is just one of Turnstone Support’s many success stories. He has demonstrated a remarkable strength of character since moving away from a supportive family home in order to build his confidence in living a more independent life.
John moved to Shaw Court, one of Radian’s supported housing schemes in Windsor, in August 2008. Turnstone Support staff initially focussed on helping John to overcome his self-esteem issues. This gradual process inspired John to try more activities and to integrate with others more, knowing he had the support he needed.
John applied for a garden community grant from Windsor Housing’s Community Link, so that he could grow his own potatoes and plants; he started carp fishing; went sailing through the Royal Yachting Association’s Sailability scheme; volunteered at an animal rescue farm; and helped his support worker, Richard Etherton, to establish a music group for people with learning disabilities. His progress has been so successful that he was invited to speak at the Turnstone Carers’ Conference and has held down a part-time job at Legoland for the last six months.
Originally placed at the theme park through the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’s (RBWM) ‘Ways into Work’ scheme, John did so well in his three week trial period that he was offered the job.
John says, "I started working at Legoland in May and I go there every Friday and Saturday between 12 o’clock and 3pm. I wear a special uniform that Legoland provide for me. I sweep the public areas and help keep the park clean and tidy."
‘Ways into Work’ supports people who have a disability to access sustainable employment and training opportunities. It provides the advice, guidance and support individuals need to make informed choices and reach their full potential within the work place.
It has given John a terrific sense of pride and a new lease of life and independence. "I talk to the staff there and I have made some new friends. I am very happy working at Legoland, as I earn money and it keeps me busy."
As with all jobs, there are highs and lows: "Unfortunately I do not get to go on any of the rides as I am working. However, I like to see the people enjoying themselves." But he does get to meet local VIPs: "I liked meeting the mayor, Catherine Bursnall, as you can see from the photograph and I told her that I work hard."
