Gas safety

Using gas in the home is normally very safe and free from problems. However, problems do occur from time to time and these problems can cause serious damage to health and endanger life.

Gas leaks can cause explosions, which ultimately can kill. Faulty gas appliances and lack of ventilation can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which has serious long term health effects and can also kill.

As landlords we have a legal obligation to carry out safety checks each year, we also commit to undertaking a full service of boilers and other gas appliances we have provided. Servicing helps to give peace of mind that your boiler is safe. There is no additional cost as it's already paid for in your rent! Please ensure that you allow access every year for the service and make sure that your gas and electricity supply is available. For more information on appliance servicing please see Gas & Fuel Servicing.

So for the sake of you and your family, please don't take risks, get gas appliances checked!

If you think you have a GAS LEAK:

  • Put out any cigarettes or naked flames/do not strike matches
  • Do not operate electrical switches, mobile phones or door bells - they can cause sparks
  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter
  • Open all doors and windows to ventilate the affected rooms
  • Keep people away from the affected area
  • Immediately phone the National Gas Helpline on 0800 111999
  • Make us aware

If you think you have an UNSAFE GAS APPLIANCE:

  • Turn off and do not use the appliance if you think it is unsafe
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the room
  • Do not sleep with it - immediately contact the National Gas Helpline on 0800 111999

Gas Safety Changes from 1 April 2009 - Gas Safe Register

The Gas Safe Register has replaced the CORGI gas registration scheme. This means that the old, widely recognized orange CORGI logo will no longer be an indication of the competence of an engineer to work on gas installations and appliances. It has been replaced by the yellow triangular Gas Safe Register logo.

What this means for you? You should check that any gas engineer visiting your home has the Gas Safe Register logo on their ID. Every engineer is required to carry a Gas Safe Register ID card with their own unique license number. The back of the card shows the type of gas work they are qualified to do. So before any gas work is carried out, always ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card. For more information on the Gas Safe Register contact us or visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk
