With degrees in Engineering and Architecture, John worked at Richard Rogers Architects and then at Milton Keynes, where he developed the first solar house in the UK, the first Passive Solar housing scheme, and co-developed the first energy rating system for housing.

John subsequently built up ECD, a company specialising in low energy, environmental design. John co-developed BREEAM, the first widely used building environmental assessment method in the world. ECD also worked closely on projects in Europe with the European Commission.

John and his team have worked on large-scale sustainable developments and played a key role in helping to set sustainability agendas.

John is Chairman of SEA the Sustainable Energy Academy, a charity dedicated to reducing carbon emissions from the built environment. The SEA Old Home Superhome campaign is helping to regenerate old housing into dwellings fit for the 21st Century. The charity has built up a network of 80 houses throughout the UK, all saving at least 60% of their carbon emissions and that are accessible to visitors to learn and be inspired; last year there were over 30,000 visitors. John is also co-founder of EHA the Existing Homes Alliance, and chairs the EHA Finance Working Group.

John has lectured widely and has authored several books and publications.
