The summer is officially over and we’re looking back on one of our favourite projects this year – The Summer Food Academy – a children’s cooking course in Hampshire.
Every Monday throughout the summer holidays, children joined us at Cafe 1759, in Whitehill and Bordon for a fun, educational and healthy holiday activity. It was an amazing success and so we are planning to run more in the future. Please do keep an eye out for more information on our website, social media and in the Cafe too!
Five sessions were run for each age group (4-8 and 9-12), with each session lasting 75 minutes. The final session combined both age groups cooking together to produce two recipes from the previous sessions, before serving them up for themselves and their parents or carers to enjoy!
Over the five weeks, everyone learnt how to cook:
- Mini beef burgers with oven baked and sweet potato fries;
- Mini pizza quiches and fruit honey oat bites;
- Brilliant banana loaf;
- Crunchy topped fish bake; and
- Macaroni cheese.
We really loved running these sessions and are so pleased at the children’s response to the cooking course. The interest we have had from parents about the Academy has been amazing!
The Academy aimed to help children gain cooking confidence, try new foods, learn about safety in the kitchen, get educated on portion sizes and make new friends and these aims were certainly achieved. We had a lot of positive feedback and are excited to do more in the future so watch this space…
“I loved the Food Academy. I made new friends and learnt how to make and try new foods.” – Participant
“It was a great experience for my child to cook independently from me and be so proud of what she made. It also definitely helped with the healthy eating message” – Parent
