Syd Howells set up his business, Social Tree Climbers, after deciding to take the leap in to self-employment. Syd used the Create course to help kick-start his business and build a supportive network.
Taking the leap
I’ve had all kinds of jobs, but thought it was time to do my own thing and do it properly. A friend said that I needed to get my act together, because I’d been talking for too long about starting my own business.
I quickly found the Radian Create course. That week there was a course starting – I begged to be put on the waiting list and that’s where it all started.
I wanted to know if I just had an expensive hobby or a viable business, and also got a much broader feel for what it is to be self-employed. I could tell that the tone was going to be right. To just be able to say how I was feeling about things and ask all the questions I wanted – I knew I was in the right place.
We have business clubs and training sessions, so now I have a network. Yes, you could go it alone – keep walking with a stone in your shoe or, take the shoe off and shake the stone out and make everything easier. And the Radian Create course does that.
I waited five years, maybe more – too long, to do it. But it’s never too late. Channel your passion in the right direction.

Connect with the world around you
Social Tree Climbers offers tree climbing and canopy camping. It’s suitable for children of all ages, I like to say. So adults and kids alike.
There are so many things you can do with trees; throw a party, go camping, do team building – you can just have a really good laugh. The limit is your imagination. We’re all about enjoying yourself.
Getting yourself from the bottom of that tree, up into the canopy just under your own strength – it’s a great feeling. There’s no better place to wake up and feel the sun hitting your face right up in the canopy. It’s beautiful.
I climb trees to get a better view of the world and life. You are climbing a living thing which gives you a whole new connection with nature. That’s something that’s maybe missing from the modern world. We’re all staring at bright little screens.
Social Tree Climbers has a couple of sites in Hampshire. But all the gear can be put in a car and taken just about anywhere.
Giant Redwoods in California, to Costa Rica, to trees on your property. You name it, we are happy to talk about tree climbing travel.
So if you only want to watch, come and watch. But if you want to try it, we’ll do everything we can to show you the ropes and give you one of the best days of your life. We’re all about enjoying yourself. Come and have a look…
