Kit Malthouse has been appointed as the new housing minister following Dominic Raab’s move to Brexit Secretary. Mr Malthouse is the eighth housing minister since 2010. Mick Sweeney, Chief Executive of Radian, responds:
“We would like to congratulate Mr Malthouse on his appointment to housing minister. We hope that his experience as a local councillor, at Westminster and at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) means that he can hit the ground running.
“He will need to get up to speed quickly, as Mr Raab did, in time for the important Social Housing Green Paper expected this month, which could mark a steep change in the role of social housing in this country.
“Given his previous roles, it’s clear that Mr Malthouse understands the links between welfare and housing. Here at Radian we recognise that there is more to housing then bricks and mortar, and we’re proud to create communities, empower our residents and support them into employment. In the last six years we have helped 610 people into employment and almost 1,800 into work-related training. Our Café 1759 is just one example of this, and how Radian is committed to building stronger communities of all ages and tenures, and we would love to show it to Mr Malthouse.
“While it is frustrating to see that the revolving door of housing ministers continues, we hope that Mr Malthouse will remain in his post longer than his recent predecessors so that he can understand the issues affecting the housing crisis and make meaningful change in the sector.”
