Radian's response to the Social Housing Green Paper
Tuesday, 14 August 2018
It may have been issued in the Summer recess, but today’s Social Housing Green Paper is nevertheless welcome. Mick Sweeney, Chief Executive of Radian responds.
We’re pleased to see that a ‘safe and decent home’ is front and centre of the government’s thinking. Earlier this month, together with the Housing & Finance Institute, we published A Time for Good Homes in which we too argue that a Good Home is essential if we are to provide people with the security and opportunity that will enable them to flourish.
We estimate that there are about 2.4 million households without access to a Good Home. There needs to be a fundamental change in our approach to social housing if we are going to address this Good Home gap. This is about our attitude towards social housing as an option for people as well as delivering the homes on the ground.
We applaud the government’s ambition to deliver a new deal for social housing residents. Increased accountability for landlords, whoever they are, should be welcomed. This is something we have already recognised at Radian and it is an important part of our commitment to our customers.
