Ahead of Starts at Home Day, Radian welcomed Caroline Dinenage, Minister for Family Support, Housing and Child Maintenance, to an independent living housing scheme for residents over the age of 60 in Swaythling, on Wednesday 30 August.

Caroline Dinenage, also MP for Gosport, was given a tour of Kelly House and insights into Radian’s work in providing specialist housing solutions for people with a range of needs by Carol Bode, Radian’s Group Chair. The Minister also took the opportunity to meet some of Kelly House’s residents to hear first hand their experience of living in a Radian home.

Carol Bode, Radian Group Chair, said: “It was great to talk to Caroline about Radian’s community support, particularly in relation to supported housing and housing for the over 60s.

“We pride ourselves on investing in people through providing high quality homes, but we are also committed to ensuring people have the tools they need to maintain their independence.”

Speaking about her visit, the Minister confirmed that she is confident about the future of supported housing thanks to the commitment shown by providers like Radian.

The Minister said: “We value the important role supported accommodation providers like Radian play in helping people live independently. I saw for myself what a difference the right support makes when I spoke to staff and residents at Kelly House. “It’s vitally important that people retain their independence throughout all stages of their life and the Government is committed to ensuring that supported accommodation providers can continue to offer their crucial services.” With over 400,000 people living in supported accommodation across the United Kingdom, the visit provided the opportunity for Radian to highlight the unique benefits of supported housing and to show why it is so important to individuals and society.

The visit took place ahead of Starts at Home Day on Friday 1 September. Starts at Home, now in its second year and run by the National Housing Federation, celebrates how supported housing helps hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people regain their independence and confidence. Radian provides a wide range of supported housing services, including over 1,000 over 60s properties, and over 400 homes specifically designed for people with a range of specialist needs.

Susan Hose, a resident at Kelly House, said: “I am very happy here at Kelly House and get lots of support from the staff. They have helped to build my confidence. I have been working very hard to weed the front garden so that it looks its best for Caroline’s visit. It’s nice to have someone come and visit us!”

Kelly House provides 33 self-contained, easily accessible flats in the heart of Swaythling. Residents are supported by an Independent Living Officer, and benefit from the added peace of mind of a 24/7 emergency alarm call system.
