Work starts on Daedalus Village scheme

Thursday, 08 November 2018

Work has started on the Daedalus Village scheme, which will see 200 homes built on the former Royal Naval Air Station at Lee-on-the-Solent.

The houses, being built by construction company Wates Residential, are to be expected to be completed in Spring 2020 and will dramatically increase the number of new homes available in Gosport.

Plans for the site are to build 120 private homes and 80 affordable homes, with the affordable homes being managed by Radian. The scheme will help breathe life back into the historic site and will include training and educational opportunities for the residents. Opportunities within the scheme will include work experience placements for local students and courses aimed at unemployed adults.

To commemorate the work starting on this scheme, Radian, along with Homes England, local MP Caroline Dinenage, Council Leader Mark Hook, and members of the local community in Lee-on-the-Solent, joined Wates Residential to bury a time capsule. Six pupils from a local school helped to bury the time capsule, while six veterans who had once worked on the site shared their memories.

The time capsule burial celebrated the past, present and future of the site, which originally served as a seaplane base during the First World War and later became the main training and administrative centre of the Fleet Air Arm.

Huge support for the scheme has been received from borough council planning bosses, and the Daedalus Village scheme was approved by Gosport Borough Council’s Regulatory Board at a meeting in May.

James Pennington, Executive Director of Development at Radian, said:

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Wates and Homes England to deliver the homes needed for local people and to create a vibrant and healthy community.”

If you would like to visit the development, the sales and marketing suite will be open from the beginning of December.
