Walking for health: we’re moving with the community in Gosport

In 2019 we supported Gosport Voluntary Action (GVA) to launch Walking for Health; a scheme created to encourage good physical and mental health and combat social isolation.

The project had a successful first few months across summer and autumn of last year, welcoming 419 people to 41 walks. In twelve months of the project GVA aim to engage at least 1,200 people in a bid to support and interact with the local community.

We are proud to support this project with funding and delighted to see an improvement to the lives of the people who have taken part in walks, with participants giving feedback about an improvement to their fitness and general health. Due to the success of the project, GVA have increased their weekly walks from two to four, giving more volunteers opportunities to take part too.

As well as encouraging the local community to get moving through waking, we have also been able to promote community cafe Privett’s Pavilion at Gosport Borough Cricket Club, with walks beginning or ending at the venue. This means we can encourage community cohesion, as well as supporting people’s health and wellbeing.

The walks are free, totally accessible and open to people of all ages. Want to take part? Find out more here.
